Personal Branding Photography: How to Go From Camera-Shy to Confident

Believe me, if you’re uncomfortable in front of the camera, you’re not alone! This is a very common fear.

With the right preparation, mindset and guidance you can do it and you’ll be amazed at how confident and good you feel once you do!

In this day of AI, in order to succeed, you need to be visible.  You need to show up in a Google search as an option.

Visibility = increased trust and connection with your potential clients.

When you’re showing up on or offline, with something of value for your ideal customer, it’s easier for you to be remembered and sought after at the time of purchase.

Seeing YOU and your face is what’ll make the difference over just product photos.  People want to do business with people.

MINDSET MATTERS

Some of the most commonly voiced fears about being photographed:

  • I look awkward.

  • I’m not photogenic

  • I don’t know what to wear or how to pose

  • I’m embarrassed about what people will think

Instead, think of it like this:

  • Brand photos are not about looking like a model, they’re about showing YOUR true self.  Your potential customers will connect with the authentic you, not some super model.

  • Think of the photoshoot as storytelling in a visual way.  We’re trying to share your mission, goals, values and personality with images.

  • Keep reminding yourself about WHY you began doing what you’re doing in the first place.  This is really more about the people you serve than yourself!  You want to show them that you’re approachable and relatable.

  • The more you do it, the more confident you’ll become.

PRACTICAL TIPS

-Wear clothes that you feel good in.  You can ask your photographer or a stylist for their opinion if needed.

  • Ask the photographer if your favorite location would work (whether that’s your boutique, office or outdoors) If you’re happy there, you’re more apt to be relaxed.

  • Have props that align with your brand (good for holding and looking at)

  • Have the photographer send you the possible poses ahead of time.  You can practice in front of a mirror!

  • Do some slow deep breathing before the photoshoot.

  • Bring water and lip balm for when your mouth goes dry.

HOW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER CAN HELP

  • Movement helps to settle nerves. Some walking shots are a great way to begin.

  • I’ll demonstrate your pose and hand placement to guide you

  • Have some favorite music ready to play on your phone

  • Take a quick break to breathe and drink water

I recently had a mini photoshoot myself and I needed water and a quick re-group break😅. For introverts, it’s definitely more challenging, but I kept thinking of my own mission (to help other entrepreneurs build their own dream businesses) and it helped me to stay more focused on the results (photos I can use to share my story and how I can help) over the sometimes awkwardness I felt:))
