Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Personal Branding Photographer
Why Your Photographer Choice Matters
It’s a common belief that branding photography means headshots. Yes, headshots are important, but they’re just one component of personal branding photography. You can think of the headshot as your online introduction.
Personal branding photography includes so much more!!
It includes images that share your story. The branding photos give your ideal clients an idea of how you do what you do, your values, your personality, and how you can help them.
It’s important for your photographer to understand your brand and mission. You want them to “get you” and what you’re trying to achieve.
#1. How Does Your Photoshoot Process Work?
You’ll want to know what information the photographer will need and their process for the photoshoot.
For instance, I always start with a discovery session to learn about your brand, your goals and your expectations for the photoshoot. We’ll collaborate and strategize.
Based upon our discussion, I’ll create a custom shoot plan. You’ll receive a helpful planning guide and I’m available to answer any questions. We’ll also review your plan together, before photoshoot day. I want you to feel comfortable with the decisions we make.
My goal is to capture YOUR story in images that are relatable and create connection with your ideal clients.
The day of the session, we’ll meet at the pre-determined place and time. That’s when the fun begins!! My mission is for you to leave feeling confident and proud to be the face of your business:)
#2. Do You Help Me Choose a Location?
The photographer should help you to choose a location that reflects your brand’s vibe and the ideal clients you’re trying to reach with your photos.
For instance, if you’re a medical professional, you’ll probably prefer a clean white studio or your office space. A wellness coach might want a peaceful outdoor space. A fitness instructor may want to shoot in the gym.
The other very important considerations for location are LIGHT and VERSATILITY. The light can truly make or break the photos. Ideally, there’s plenty of natural light coming in from expansive windows. And, several possible settings.
As an example, a boutique hotel could possibly offer a lobby, library and rooftop for varied shots.
#3. How Do You Help Your Clients Feel Comfortable on Camera?
Most of us do NOT feel comfortable in front of the camera, so this is an important one. As an introvert myself I can truly relate.
I believe mindset really matters for helping to conquer our insecurities and fears around this. Remembering WHY you’re doing this (to share your mission with your ideal clients and show them how you can help them) really does help. Wearing clothing that makes YOU feel good also helps. Your photographer should also provide some practical tips and guidance on the day.
#4. Do You Provide Guidance for Wardrobe Choices?
There are a few general rules when it comes to what to wear (or what you shouldn’t wear!).
I provide my clients with a wardrobe checklist and blog post link to answer most common concerns.
Your photographer can also provide stylist recommendations if preferred.
#5. How Do You Ensure the Photos Align with My Brand?
This is where the discovery session comes into play. During that (or those) discussions, your photographer should ask relevant questions about your business to guide the photo choices.
It’s important to learn about who you serve and what they’re biggest fears and desires are. How exactly do you help them and what would they need to see from you to trust doing business with you? Also, what makes your business different from your competitors?
#6. Do You Provide Prop Suggestions?
It’s helpful if your photographer can give you a list of possible props that’ll help to share YOUR story.
#7. Do You Offer Video or Reels?
A lot of photographers will offer these as add-ons to their packages for an additional fee.
#8. What’s the Process After the Shoot?
Every photographer has a different process and timeline for editing and photo delivery. It’s important to make sure the personal branding photographer you choose, understands how soon you need your photos and where the photos are going to be used.
You might also ask if they provide any help with using the photos to market your business!
Finding the right personal branding photographer isn’t just about great photos — it’s about finding someone who sees you, understands your story, and helps you show up with confidence. When your photographer truly gets your brand, the photos that are captured will be relatable to your audience and create connecting points with them to grow trust.
Take your time asking these questions, trust your instincts, and choose someone who makes you feel comfortable and inspired. That’s when the magic happens.
